I’ll Be More Than A Lover More Than A Woman More Than Your Lover

I’m severely annoyed at the way we police ourselves as people of color (now we can argue this a direct result of white society teaching us to hate ourselves, but that’s another story). Someone made the joke that Omarion is with MMG, Bow Wow is with Cash Money, and Lil’ Romeo is doing ICDC commercials coming at his neck as if what he’s doing is so wrong. Oh it’s wrong for a MAN OF COLOR to promote something positive. It gets better, I’m sick of seeing posts and shade thrown at Ice Cube for going from films like Boyz In Tha Hood to Are We There Yet? so he’s supposed to rap about a lifestyle he no longer lives 20+ years later!? He’s not entitled to make family movies for people of color? How often do Dreamworks and the rest of ‘em make a film that’s soft and cushy and we can self-identify with? How often do we see some people that look like they could be our relatives in films like Meet the Fockers, Road Trip, etc.!? He’s one of the few that bring to a big screen some light hearted family films. I long for the chance to click on Lifetime or Oxygen or WE to see a relationship film with women that looks like me, speaks AAVE like me, go through relationship problems like me, and lives in a decen neighborhood, but I’m reduced to looking for “urban” (whatever the fuck that means) films on Netflix. So it would awesome if we stop policing ourselves in a quest to get some normalcy or representation, but then again when has America cared?
